Robert S. Katz, MD
Robert S. Katz, MD, is vice chair of the Department of Pathology, attending pathologist and medical director of the blood bank at Morristown Memorial Hospital and Overlook Hospital in New Jersey.
Dr. Katz earned his BA in history magna cum laude with high honors at Haverford College in Haverford, Pennsylvania, where he received the first Cope Fellowship for Graduate Study and the Lippincott Prize for historic research. An elected member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society, he completed his MD at Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University in New York City. After graduating, Dr. Katz performed his internship in medicine at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical College in Richmond, and his residency in anatomic and clinical pathology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Prior to moving to Morristown in 1988, he was assistant professor of pathology and laboratory medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
Dr. Katz has given local, regional, national and international presentations for many scientific organizations, including the American Society of Hematology, American Association of Blood Banks, International Society for Cardiovascular Surgery and International Congress of the Transplantation Society.
He is a fellow of the College of American Pathologists and the American Association of Blood Banks. A gifted writer, Dr. Katz is the author or coauthor of articles and textbook chapters on a variety of topics in pathology. His articles are published in American Journal of Clinical Pathology, American Journal of Nephrology, Bulletin of the History of Medicine and Transfusion, among others.
“The demand for blood in America is slowly beginning to exceed supply,” says Dr. Katz. “Finding adequate amounts of blood that is safe and appropriate for our patients is the greatest challenge facing the Medical Director of our Blood Banks. Meeting that challenge is absolutely essential if we wish to provide the highest level of care and safety to our patients. This challenge motivates me every day.”
