William J. Dowling, MD

William J. Dowling, MD, is chair and attending orthopedic surgeon in the Department of Orthopedics at Morristown Memorial Hospital. He also serves as medical director of orthopedic services for Atlantic Health, and is a clinical instructor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) - New Jersey Medical School (NJMS) in Newark.

Dr. Dowling earned his Bachelor of Science at Saint Peter's College in Jersey City, NJ, and his Doctor of Medicine at UMDNJ - NJMS. After graduating, he completed his internship in surgery at Martland Hospital and his residency in orthopedic surgery at UMDNJ - NJMS, where he was designated chief resident.

Dr. Dowling has been principal investigator for research projects concerning anticoagulant therapy, pain treatment and therapy for anemia in orthopedic surgery patients. A fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and American College of Surgeons, he is a member of the New Jersey Orthopedic Society, Orthopedic Surgeons of New Jersey, Medical Society of New Jersey and Morris County Medical Society. He is one of two orthopedic surgeons in New Jersey who serves as a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons Board of Counselors. He is the author of "Critical Pathways in Total Joint Procedures," which was published in Strategies for Healthcare Excellence. New York Magazine has listed him in "Best Doctors in the Tri-state Area," New Jersey Monthly has listed him in "Top Doctors in Orthopedics," and Castle Connelly has listed him in "America's Top Doctors."
