Cardiac Classroom

Morristown Memorial Hospital and Liberty Science Center collaborate on a program called Cardiac Classroom.

High school students rarely see any surgical procedure more advanced than a frog dissection. Until now: thanks to a partnership between Atlantic Health and the Liberty Science Center, middle and high school students can now watch open heart surgery during “Live From the Cardiac Classroom.”

Made possible with funding from Johnson & Johnson and Verizon, Cardiac Classroom enables students to view an actual bypass operation performed by cardiac surgeons at Morristown Memorial Hospital. Students can ask the medical team questions while viewing video teleconferencing technology over a high bandwidth phone line from a Liberty Science Center classroom.

Cardiac Classroom introduces young people to medical careers and communicates the importance of healthy lifestyle choices. Through the use of advanced technology, students view an entire bypass procedure. The medical team can see and communicate with the students and vice versa.

Cardiac Classroom has received several awards, including the Worldfest Film Festival Award, American Association of Museums’ Muse Award, and the U.S. International Film and Video Festival certificate for creative excellence.
