A Day in the Life of a Resident
7:00 - 8:00am
Bedside work rounds on the inpatient units
Residents discuss each case admitted to the ward, as well as the daily plan and progress. The team consists of first year residents and medical students who are supervised by senior residents and the chief resident.
8:00 - 9:00am
General inpatient care
First year residents utilize this hour to communicate with the various pediatricians and sub-specialists who are rounding on their patients. This is the perfect opportunity to review findings, management and the plan for the day.
9:00 - 10:00am
Attending rounds
The floor team in addition to a general pediatrician and a sub-specialist, discuss case presentations and differential diagnosis with emphasis on pathophysiology.
10:00am - Noon
General patient care
House officers spend this time each morning providing care to their patients, as well as admitting new patients.
Noon - 1:00pm
Noon conference
Faculty members from subspecialties, general pediatrics and other disciplines present topics in a variety of different formats. Each month is dedicated to a specialty which is the predominant theme for each conference in addition to a variety of other pediatric topics. Board review is incorporated into noon conference, as well and is geared toward that month’s specialty topic.
1:00 - 5:00pm
General patient care
Residents utilize this time to discuss treatments with their patient’s families, as well as to provide ongoing care. New patients are admitted throughout the day and are equally assigned.
5:00pm - 8:00am
On-call
The first-year curriculum places residents on call every fourth night. Responsibilities include the work up of new patients, as well as ongoing care for the inpatient unit until the morning. A senior resident is also on-call and is always available for supervision, consultation and support. The post-call first-year resident and senior resident join the floor team at 7:00 am for walk rounds, to ensure the smooth transition of patient care.
