BD Diabetes Center
Type 1 diabetes mellitus, often referred to as juvenile diabetes or insulin dependent diabetes, affects over 1-million young people in the United States (approximately one in every 400 children and adolescents). Treatment often includes insulin replacement in addition to a balanced meal plan and home blood glucose monitoring. Type 2 diabetes, sometimes referred to as adult onset diabetes, also occurs in children and adolescents. This form of diabetes is usually associated with obesity. Treatment may include oral medications and/or insulin in addition to diet and exercise. With control of blood sugars, long-term diabetic complications can be minimized in both forms of diabetes. The BD Diabetes Center at the Goryeb Children's Hospital offers comprehensive diabetes care, from diagnosis through young adulthood. Our philosophy emphasizes a team approach to teaching self-care and optimizing blood sugars. Our team is comprised of nurses and dietitians who are certified diabetes educators, social worker and board-certified pediatric endocrinologists, experienced in diabetes management. The BD Diabetes Center education program is recognized by the American Diabetes Association. In addition, the Center offers individualized patient care, age specific support groups, targeted seminars, annual symposia, social events and education materials. The Center produces videos and web-based educational programs including Think Like a Pancreas, an educational site for adolescents with Type 1 diabetes. |
