Faculty
The Morristown Memorial Hospital Department of Internal Medicine consists of approximately 300 salaried and volunteer physicians. All have been board-certified in both internal medicine and, where applicable, a subspecialty. Many of our physicians are devoted to teaching and are actively involved in clinical research. Our full-time faculty are very involved in our residents' education. Their diverse educational and specialty backgrounds expose our residents to a variety of disciplines:
Stanley Fiel, MD, Regional Chair, Department of Medicine, Atlantic Health Dr. Fiel attended the Medical College of Pennsylvania, completed his residency training at Temple University Hospital, and undertook his fellowship training in pulmonary and critical care medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Prior to joining the Atlantic Health team in 2003, he was the chairman of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Hahnemann and Drexel Schools of Medicine. Dr. Fiel is world renowned for his expertise in both chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and in the management of cystic fibrosis in adults. Donna Astiz, MD, Program Director Dr. Astiz attended medical school at Creighton University and completed her residency training at University of Southern California/Los Angeles County Medical Center. She has held academic faculty appointments at several university hospitals, including Albany Medical Center and Chicago Medical School. Dr. Astiz came to Atlantic Health in 1989 as the ambulatory director for the residency program, with a special interest in health care access for the poor, Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) medicine, and resident education. In 2003, Dr. Astiz was named program director of the residency program. Jacqueline Darcey, MD, Associate Program Director Dr. Darcey worked in research and development at Hoffman LaRoche before attending medical school at SUNY Health Science Center at Brooklyn School of Medicine. She completed her residency at Atlantic Health's Morristown Memorial Hospital, followed by a year as chief resident focusing on educational innovations. Dr. Darcey's interest in innovations continues as she focuses on simulation training, research education for residents and the development of online resources.
