How often are you on-call in your first year?
Usually, interns are on-call no more than once every four nights.
How many months of night float do you work in the first year?
Interns typically spend three months on night float.
How does night float work?
Night float covers the inpatient units from 7:00pm to 7:00am Sunday, 5:00pm to 7:00am Monday through Wednesday and 9:00pm to 7:00am on Thursday. The weekends (Friday, Saturday and Sunday during the day) are covered by the residents who are not assigned to night float.
How does weekend call work?
Interns on-call for the weekend sign in at 7:00am on Saturday or Sunday and work for 24 hours. Sign out is 7:00am on Sunday or 7:00am on Monday. Interns leave post-call in the morning when they are finished with their work.
Will I get enough supervision?
Yes. Senior residents will continue and full time hospitalists and faculty are available for supervision at both sites.
How big is the residency program?
We have four residents per year, for a total of 16 residents – a big enough team to cope with illness and absences, but a small enough group to create more camaraderie and mutual support.
What ancillary services do you offer?
Phlebotomy is available 24 hours per day. IVs are administered by the nurses. Transport techs take patients to radiology and various other departments for testing. Our nursing staff is excellent and the residents enjoy a good relationship with them.
Do you have a continuity clinic?
All of the residents maintain a panel of patients in either Overlook Hospital or Morristown Memorial Hospital clinics. Clinic hours are scheduled for one-half day per week; there is great emphasis placed on continuity of care.
Do you have outpatient obstetrics and gynecology experiences in addition to continuity clinic?
During ambulatory OB/GYN rotations, residents rotate through a variety of settings, including subspecialty offices. This practice enables residents to work with a variety of patients from different populations and with a variety of physicians who have different practice management styles.
Is there a research requirement?
All residents are required to do scholarly research, which includes clinical research and curriculum development. Atlantic Health is the primary academic and clinical affiliate in New Jersey of Mount Sinai School of Medicine and The Mount Sinai Hospital which enables our residents to collaborate with experts and residents at other facilities on cutting edge research projects.
What is the patient population?
Morristown Memorial Hospital is a regional perinatal center with a level III NICU servicing a 1,200 square mile area of Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey. Patients come from urban, suburban and rural areas, various socioeconomic backgrounds, and even other countries. Overlook Hospital is a community level III hospital which provides more routine quality care for a smaller pool of patients.
