Bariatric Surgery

Morristown Memorial Hospital is one of the only hospitals in the region to offer a coordinated metabolic medicine and bariatric surgery program – the Metabolic Medicine & Weight Control Center. The Center is accredited as a Level 1a Bariatric Surgery Center by the American College of Surgeons which recognizes the safety, efficiency and overall positive outcomes of our health care team. Our expert surgeons specialize in laparoscopic surgery that result in faster recovery times, shorter hospital stays, less pain after surgery and fewer complications.

Pre-Bariatric Surgery Preparatory Program

People who plan to undergo bariatric surgery at our center must work to lose weight through medical and nutritional support first. If these therapies fail to promote weight loss, our surgeons will evaluate whether an individual is a good candidate for bariatric surgery. In addition, every bariatric surgery patient must undergo medical, nutritional and psychological evaluations prior to the surgery.

Post-Bariatric Surgery Program

To help ensure comprehensive post-surgical care and safe, successful weight loss, our team continues to work closely with each patient to monitor progress in a number of different areas:

  • Lower body mass index (BMI)
  • Reduced elevated levels of total and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol
  • Decreased triglycerides
  • Increased high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol (good cholesterol)
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Reduced blood sugar levels
  • Improved metabolism
  • Corrected vitamin/mineral deficiencies
  • Increased mobility
  • Improved body image
  • Improved quality of life

Our team also monitors bariatric surgery patients to adjust medication changes, increase protein requirements, assess fluid losses and electrolyte changes, determine the need for vitamin and mineral supplementation, and monitor malabsorption and reduced capacity to hold food.
