Radiation Therapy and Radiosurgery
Carol G. Simon Cancer Center at Overlook Hospital’s Radiation Oncology Department provides the most advanced cancer treatment services to treat all types of tumors. Special three-dimensional treatment planning systems and a simulator are used to plan patients’ treatment regimes. The treatment team consists of board-certified radiation oncologist, medical physicist, radiation therapist, registered nurses, licensed counselor and an oncology dietitian.
Radiation and radiosurgery treatment modalities include:
Stereotactic Cranial and Extracranial Radiosurgery - Overlook Hospital was the first facility in New Jersey to offer this treatment modality to treat body parts outside of the brain.
- CyberKnife Stereotactic Radiosurgery -The CyberKnife procedure is a painless radiation treatment using image-guided robotics to precisely and non-invasively destroy tumors and other lesions with multiple beams of high-energy radiation. We were the first facility in the tri-state area to offer this highly advanced treatment.
- High-performance linear accelerator- A traditional radiation technique that targets cancer while preserving as much healthy tissue as possible.
- Brachytherapy or seed implantation - Either temporary or permanent radioactive implants are placed directly into the cancerous tissue to maximize the dose of radiation to the cancer, while minimizing the dose to adjacent tissue.
