Treatment

Cancer Care at Overlook Hospital: TreatmentIf cancer treatment is necessary, you can take comfort in knowing our doctors are highly skilled in the latest surgical and medical techniques. Depending on the type of cancer you have, Overlook physicians can provide a variety of treatment options. In addition, we offer a variety of non-surgical cancer therapies to halt or reverse cancer growth while preserving healthy tissue.

The types of cancer we treat include:

Breast Cancer

The Breast Center at Overlook Hospital is approved by the American College of Radiology and the Mammography Quality Standards Act. Our multidisciplinary team of board-certified surgeons, oncologists, pathologists, radiation oncologists and radiologists will tailor a treatment plan to your diagnosis.

The Center coordinates the hospital’s mammography, breast biopsy, breast MRI and bone densitometry services. We were the first hospital in the state to use a vacuum-assisted stereotactic breast biopsy system.

Genito-Urinary Cancer

We treat a variety of genito-urinary cancers, including those of the bladder, kidney and prostate, using innovative new procedures, including Radiofrequency Ablation, Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), radiation seed implants and CyberKnife radiosurgery. A multidisciplinary team of board-certified urologists, radiation and medical oncologists, and physicists work together to develop a treatment plan tailored to each patient's specific needs.

Brain Tumors

The Brain Tumor Center of New Jersey is a collaboration between Overlook Hospital and the Atlantic Neuroscience Institute. Through advanced medical, surgical and radiotherapy treatments, and CyberKnife Radiosurgery, it offers comprehensive care for patients with all types of brain tumors. This program gives patients access to various clinical trials.

Lung Cancer

We participate in the ongoing clinical trials for the treatment of lung cancer and utilize CyberKnife radiosurgery for small inoperable lesions. With state-of-the-art techniques like Video Assisted Thoracic Surgery and IMRT, we are giving new hope to patients who previously would have been unable to endure an operation.

Colorectal Cancer and Digestive Diseases

The Digestive Center treats all aspects of digestive disease from diagnostic testing to minimally invasive surgery. This type of surgery is minimally invasive fiber optic technology which limits the amount of incisions, reduces pain and shortens recovery time. Several colon procedures are offered to alleviate symptoms and provide curative treatment to patients who suffer from colon cancer.

We are the first in New Jersey to offer 3D Trans Rectal Ultrasound with Ultrasound Guided Biopsy for better staging and treatment management of colorectal cancers and the Hybrid Procedure that combines laparoscopic and traditional surgery for malignant colon disease. In addition, treatments may include chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

Gynecologic Cancer

We provide optimal, personalized care to women with gynecologic malignancies including vulvar, vaginal, cervical, uterine, and ovarian cancers. Up-to-date screening facilities are available for cytologic and colposcopic detection of cervical cancer, sonographic detection of ovarian cancer, and surgical diagnostic and treatment procedures. Prompt communication and consultation with the patient’s referring physician facilitates treatment planning. Treatment options for gynecologic cancers include radical surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy, or a combination of these.

Pain Management Service

A clear mind without pain is one that can best battle cancer.  Nearly 25 percent of patients with cancer suffer from pain related to their diagnosis and nearly 75 percent of patients with advanced cancer suffer from pain.  Fortunately, with appropriate intervention this symptom can be effectively managed in the vast majority of patients.  We provide assistance for patients with cancer or a history of cancer through a variety of modalities including medical, integrative and procedural therapies.  A collaborative approach is utilized between oncologists and the team to effectively diagnose and treat syndromes of cancer pain thus allowing the patient to heal faster and improve his or her overall state of mind.

Each day there was a distinct positive sign of recovery, which I believe was due to the very close attention and care around the clock by your very competent staff.
