Morristown, NJ, July 2013 – Morristown Medical Center, part of Atlantic Health System, has been recognized as a “Leader in LGBT Healthcare Equality” in the Healthcare Equality Index 2013, an annual survey conducted by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation, the educational arm of the country’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) organization. Morristown Medical Center earned top marks for its commitment to equitable, inclusive care for LGBT patients and their families, who can face significant challenges in securing adequate healthcare.
“At Morristown Medical Center, we strive for an inclusive environment that not only offers the highest quality health care, but also recognizes and appreciates all patients’, caregivers’ and employees’ views irrespective of sex, race, ethnic background, sexual orientation, or age,” said Deborah Visconi, director of operations, and co-chair, Diversity Council, Morristown Medical Center. “Morristown Medical Center’s recognition as a ‘Leader in LGBT Healthcare Equality’ is an important step toward our goal of providing equitable and inclusive care within a healing environment for all patients and families and our vision of empowering all of the communities we serve to be the healthiest they can be.”
Morristown Medical Center was one of a select group of 464 healthcare facilities nationwide to be named Leaders in LGBT Healthcare Equality. Facilities awarded this title meet key criteria for equitable care, including non-discrimination policies for LGBT patients and employees, a guarantee of equal visitation for same-sex partners and parents, and LGBT health education for key staff members.
“LGBT patients deeply appreciate the welcoming environment provided by a Leader in LGBT Healthcare Equality,” said Shane Snowdon, HRC Health & Aging Director. “It makes a big difference to know that your local healthcare facility is fully committed to giving you the same care it gives your neighbors and co-workers.”
Members of Morristown Medical Center’s Diversity Council sought the hospital’s inclusion on the Healthcare Equality Index, an example of the council’s mission to champion a diverse workforce and foster an inclusive culture that delivers the highest quality care to a diverse patient population. The Diversity Council seeks to create a multicultural environment that aligns with the needs of the community.
