November 2013, Morristown, NJ – Morristown Medical Center has opened a new Wound Healing Program, offering a multidisciplinary panel of medical and surgical physicians that utilize the most advanced treatment strategies combining both medical and surgical modalities. Located at 435 South Street in Morristown at the Ambulatory Care Building, the program offers individualized treatment plans to suit the needs of each patient.
“As many as five million Americans cope daily with a chronic, non-healing wound that prevents them from enjoying their favorite activities or even performing simple routines,” said Robert Skerker, MD, medical director of the Wound Healing Program at Morristown Medical Center. He added, “Effective treatment to chronic wounds is essential; modern therapeutic options can enable many patients to heal.”
The Wound Healing Program at Morristown Medical Center offers: state-of-the-art hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), comprehensive case management from inpatient to outpatient care to manage the complex wound needs of each individual and inpatient consultation services. The Center has Certified Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nurses (CWOCN) who hold outpatient clinics for ostomy patients for appliance fittings, stomal markings and trouble-shooting. The Ambulatory Care building has pre-procedural testing, including X-ray and laboratory services on-site.
Dr. Skerker’s interest in wound healing pertains to patients with trauma or post-operative surgical wounds, complex orthopedic injuries with residual soft tissue defects, wounds in the geriatric population, wounds that result in amputations or after amputations from poorly fitting prosthetic devices. He commonly treats patients with diabetic foot ulcers, venous leg ulcers and pressure ulcers.
“Most patients who participate through regular visits to the Wound Healing Program heal successfully, even those who have been suffering from chronic wounds for years,” said Dr. Skerker. “The benefits of treatment at our center are quicker recovery, lower rates of hospitalization, increased prevention of prolonged and/or permanent disability and decreased risk of limb amputation for people with severe wounds.”
