Flemington, NJ, October 9, 2012 – Hunterdon Healthcare System and Atlantic Health System today announced the signing of a Letter of Intent to form a jointly-owned health care alliance. The main goal of the alliance is to provide patients in Hunterdon, Somerset, Mercer and Warren counties greater care coordination and expanded services. While each system will retain its independence, the alliance will create significant clinical and economic efficiencies to lower the cost of health care while providing the highest quality services.
The Letter of Intent, signed by both organizations, culminates a year-long effort by Hunterdon Healthcare to assess proposed relationships with other health care systems, both within and outside New Jersey. A Hunterdon Healthcare task force including representatives of the board of trustees, medical staff and management, reviewed proposals received from several health care systems both within and outside New Jersey. The Board of Hunterdon Healthcare concluded that the proposed alliance with Atlantic Health System best meets the objectives set by the task force while maintaining its mission as an independent community health care organization.
Robert Wise, President and CEO of Hunterdon Healthcare System, noted, “This strategic alliance with Atlantic Health System gives Hunterdon Healthcare a dynamic partner while maintaining our strong commitment to independence and local control. Atlantic Health will enable us to participate in larger and broader health care improvement initiatives that would not be possible for Hunterdon Healthcare alone. We are truly pleased about what this means for the future of our community.”
Under the Letter Of Intent, Hunterdon Healthcare and Atlantic Health System agree to work together on a broad range of activities within the geographic scope of Hunterdon, Mercer, Somerset and Warren counties. These will include population health initiatives; patient data management and connectivity; increased scope of clinical offerings at Hunterdon Healthcare; improved access for Hunterdon Healthcare’s physicians and patients to specialized services and clinical trials with Atlantic Health System; and joint purchasing arrangements to reduce costs of equipment, supplies and pharmaceuticals.
“We are delighted to form this new alliance, which represents a new collaboration that will clearly benefit both organizations and the patients we serve,” said Joseph A. Trunfio, CEO, Atlantic Health System. “Atlantic Health System and Hunterdon Healthcare System are advancing shared objectives to work toward improving the health status of the communities we serve. This alliance offers community members more immediate access to certain specialty services and advanced technology. Patients should expect the best clinical and evidence based practices without duplicating efforts and testing, thereby also reducing costs to families.”
The Hunterdon Healthcare System includes the Hunterdon Medical Center, Hunterdon Regional Community Health, Hunterdon Medical Center Foundation and Midjersey Health Corp. Atlantic Health System owns and operates Morristown Medical Center, Overlook Medical Center, Newton Medical Center and Goryeb Children's Hospital.
