Dr. Danielle McBrian Joins Newly Designated Level IV Epilepsy Center at Overlook Hospital
For Immediate Release
Summit, NJ, February 16, 2010 – The Comprehensive Epilepsy Center of the Atlantic Health Neuroscience Institute at Overlook Hospital recently received designation by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers (NAEC) as a Level 4 epilepsy center, one of only two in New Jersey. This designation means that the Epilepsy Center adheres to strict criteria and offers the most complex forms of epilepsy care, including complex and cutting-edge surgical techniques, intensive neurodiagnostic testing, and comprehensive psychosocial care.
Patients are usually referred to the Epilepsy Center for one of the following reasons:
Patients are diagnosed using methods such as MRI, PET scan, video EEG, Wada test, and SPECT scan. Once a diagnosis is established, a course of treatment is determined. The Epilepsy Center offers a wide variety of treatment options, including anticonvulsant medication, dietary therapy, vagus nerve stimulator, surgery, and psychological support.
Danielle K. McBrian, MD, a pediatric epilepsy specialist, recently joined the Center. Dr. McBrian completed her medical degree at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City and is board certified in Neurology with Special Qualification in Child Neurology. Dr. McBrian completed a two-year post-doctoral Fellowship in epilepsy.
Epilepsy is a chronic condition which requires special attention for patients to achieve normal daily living. Less than 70% of epilepsy patients respond well to medication-only treatment. In those patients who continue to experience seizures despite one or more medications, alternative treatment options, such as epilepsy surgery, may be worthwhile considerations to pursue. The Atlantic Neuroscience Institute’s Epilepsy Center provides comprehensive care with full-time staff consisting of board certified, epilepsy fellowship-trained neurologists, epilepsy nursing, a patient advocacy program, neuropsychology, EEG technologists, and access to some of the most technologically-advanced diagnostic equipment available.
If you or someone you know and care about suffers from epilepsy, please call the Comprehensive Epilepsy Center at Overlook Hospital at 908-522-4990 to schedule a consultation.
In addition to comprehensive epilepsy services, the Atlantic Neuroscience Institute at Overlook Hospital provides the most sophisticated and advanced stroke care available in New Jersey. It is also home to the Brain Tumor Center of New Jersey which offers the newest in clinical trials and brain tumor treatment.
