UNION, NJ FEBRUARY 2011 –
Union Township officials joined physicians, staff and other representatives of Overlook Hospital on Thursday, February 17, as the health care organization celebrated the opening of its new imaging center, Overlook Hospital Imaging, Union Campus, which brings
state-of-the-art imaging services
into the heart of the Union community.
Located in the former Union Hospital building, where Overlook has operated the Overlook Hospital Emergency Services, Union Campus, since 2007, the new imaging center offers a variety of imaging procedures, such as MRI, CT, mammography, bone density scanning, digital radiography (x-ray) and ultrasound, using the newest technology available and staffed by skilled, board-certified radiologists who are fellowship-trained (additional years of dedicated training) in neuroradiology, body imaging and breast imaging, and credentialed technicians.
Union mayor Joseph Florio was joined by township committeeman Anthony Terrezza, as well as the township’s assistant business administrator Ronald Manzella, who stated that they were grateful for the investment Overlook had made in developing services in the facility after Union Hospital closed.
“Several years ago, when we lost Union Hospital, it was a great loss, but I’ve got nothing but kudos for Overlook Hospital,” Florio said. “It has really filled the void.”
“We’re really happy with how this turned out,” Florio continued. “We really appreciate Overlook Hospital making an investment in Union.”
The hospital invested about $6 million in equipment in the new center, which includes all-digital devices, such as the new GE Lightspeed CT scanner, which not only allows for faster, more comfortable scans, but also decreases the dosage of radiation used by 40 percent in comparison to other, older model CT scanners.
Another highlight of the new center is the wide-bore MRI. This machine, the only one of its kind in the area, includes a wider space, to provide relief for claustrophobic patients, while providing higher-quality images than an open MRI. With a capacity of up to 550 pounds, it will be able to accommodate most patients.
Being all-digital, the images scanned at the new center will be available electronically, meaning they can be accessed and read by radiologists at the center, or off-site at Overlook Hospital.
Michael Rokhsar, DO, chairman of the department of radiology for Overlook Hospital, said that 16 subspecialty radiologists are available at the center to read the advanced imaging studies and provide rapid diagnosis.
“The ability to image quickly, accurately and safely is now available to patients in the Union community,” Rokhsar said.
Florio noted that he himself has had to utilize Overlook’s emergency services at the Union campus, and was impressed with the quality of care he received. Terrezza said that the feedback he and township officials received regarding Overlook’s services has been positive.
“The community has confidence in the hospital and its services,” Terrezza said.
Alan Lieber, president of Overlook Hospital and vice president of Atlantic Health, noted that the satellite emergency department in Union is running at about the same rate as when Union Hospital was a full-service hospital. The satellite department, which offers the same high quality of care offered at the Summit campus, has seen a 34 percent increase in volume in the last two years.
“We feel that’s a big vote of confidence, and now this is our next, big venture,” Lieber said.
