MORRISTOWN, NJ JANUARY 22, 2010 – Atlantic Health, the parent company of Morristown Memorial Hospital in Morristown and Overlook Hospital Center in Summit, was named for a second consecutive year by FORTUNE® as one of the magazine’s “100 Best Companies to Work For®,” citing Atlantic Health’s growth amid the national economic downturn and its accomplishments in communicating with its employees.
Atlantic Health was the only hospital system in northern New Jersey to receive the honor this year, and is one of only 14 hospital systems nationwide to earn a coveted spot on the prestigious list, which includes some of the country’s best-known and most innovative corporations such as Google, Wegmans, Starbucks, Microsoft, Mattel and DreamWorks. Atlantic Health ranked 81 on FORTUNE’s® 13th annual list. The full list and related stories appear in the February 8 issue of FORTUNE®, available on newsstands on Monday, January 25, 2010 and now at fortune.com/bestcompanies.
Following the recent economic downturn, FORTUNE® based much of its selection for this year’s list on whether companies continued to hire and how they helped their employees weather the recession. Despite a difficult economic climate particularly in the field of health care, Atlantic Health continued to hire new employees in the last year, and did not reduce pensions, pay increases, or benefits. In fact, Atlantic Health doubled the amount of professional development training courses offered to employees, with enrollment in some courses tripling. Atlantic Health also offers programs to help employees such as free workshops on financial and retirement planning, Social Security benefits, pension plans, investment planning, debt management, and education savings plans, as well as free workshops for coping with financial stress. Certified financial counselors are available on site daily as well.
“We have long recognized the importance of not only being able to hire people, but to also ensure that our employees have a worthwhile experience working here. With thoughtful guidance and careful planning, we have been able to continue to do both amid a less-than-preferable economic climate,” said Andrew Kovach, Vice President, Human Resources and Chief Administrative Officer, Atlantic Health. “To again be recognized for a second consecutive year through the support and dedication of our employees is the most rewarding feedback for those efforts we could receive.”
The magazine also recognized communication initiatives at Atlantic Health, including regular town forums and luncheons in which Atlantic Health’s senior management meets with employees to discuss what is happening in the organization and gain input from workers. Also noted were Atlantic Health’s numerous internal communications techniques, including newsletters, calendars and journals, home mailings and an emergency notification system.
Atlantic Health was also again lauded for its emphasis on a work/life balance in its recruitment efforts, through “time off” benefits, child and elder care resources, back up care, and on-site daycare.
To pick the 100 Best Companies, Fortune partners with the Great Place to Work Institute to conduct the most extensive employee survey in corporate America. Three hundred forty-three companies participated in this year's survey. A company’s score is determined by responses from a random sample of employees to questions related to their attitudes about the management's credibility, job satisfaction, and camaraderie, as well as the company’s response to questions about pay and benefit programs and a series of open-ended questions about hiring, communication, and diversity.
The FORTUNE® award follows several other honors that have recently been bestowed to Atlantic Health’s facilities and employees:
