High Praise by Employees puts Organization on the List for 3rd Consecutive Year
MORRISTOWN, NJ JANUARY 2011 – Atlantic Health, the parent company of Morristown Memorial Hospital in Morristown and Overlook Hospital in Summit, climbed the list of FORTUNE® magazine’s “100 Best Companies to Work For®.” This is the organization’s third consecutive year of being recognized by the magazine for maintaining a rewarding working environment for its employees.
Atlantic Health ranked 54 this year, up from 81 last year, on the prestigious list which includes some of the country’s best-known and most innovative corporations such as Google, Wegmans, Zappos.com, Microsoft, Mattel and DreamWorks. The magazine appeared on newsstands on Monday, January 24, 2011. Atlantic Health’s President and Chief Executive Officer, Joseph A. Trunfio, was among the six leaders from companies on the FORTUNE list who attended the ringing of the closing bell of the New York Stock Exchange on Friday, January 21, 2011.
To pick the 100 Best Companies to Work For, FORTUNE partners with the Great Place to Work Institute to conduct the most extensive employee survey in corporate America. This year, 311 companies participated in the survey.
Two-thirds of a company's score is based on the results of the Institute's Trust Index survey, which is sent to a random sample of employees from each company. The survey asks questions related to their attitudes about management's credibility, job satisfaction, and camaraderie. A great deal of Atlantic Health’s placement on the list is due to the overwhelmingly positive feedback that employees provided for this portion of the survey, having reported high marks from workers regarding issues including pride and camaraderie in the company.
“The real key to this is that it’s our employees who voted for our inclusion on the list,” said Andy Kovach, Vice President, Human Resources and Chief Administrative Officer, Atlantic Health. “That feedback speaks volumes about the passion our employees have for working here and their connection to the organization. It is truly something to be proud of.”
The other third of the scoring is based on the company's responses to the Institute's Culture Audit, which includes detailed questions about pay and benefit programs and a series of open-ended questions about hiring practices, internal communications, training, recognition programs and diversity efforts. FORTUNE lauded the offerings Atlantic Health provides for its employees, noting the organization’s generous salaries, as well as programs such as child care offered on-site at Atlantic Health facilities, including both Morristown Memorial and Overlook Hospitals.
Driving employees’ satisfaction, in part, is the organization’s efforts to recognize employee’s accomplishments, as well as numerous personal and professional development programs. One of these recognition efforts is the “25 Year Club,” an initiative in which, each year, Atlantic Health holds a celebration for employees who have been with Atlantic Health for 25 years or more. Developmental programs offered to employees include free webinars, mentoring and more than 30 free classes and more than 100 free sessions, in a variety of topics, such as communications, computer skills, financial, management and clinical skills, some of which are taught by internal faculty members who are experts in their field.
Also noted in the survey by employees were programs and efforts in communication, creating an atmosphere of transparency within the company. These efforts include luncheons with the CEO of Atlantic Health and presidents of both Morristown and Overlook Hospitals, and internal online chat programs that provide an outlet for questions and communication for employees with senior management.
