Atlantic Health System Among Fortune Magazine's '100 Best Companies to Work For®' for a Fourth Year
MORRISTOWN, NJ, JANUARY 2012 – Atlantic Health System, one of the largest health care systems in New Jersey, was named for the fourth straight year to the list of FORTUNE® magazine’s “100 Best Companies to Work For®,” highlighting AHS’s ongoing commitment to creating a rewarding experience for its employees.
Atlantic Health System, the parent company of Morristown Medical Center in Morristown, Overlook Medical Center in Summit, Newton Medical Center in Newton, and Goryeb Children’s Hospital, ranked 65 this year – the highest-ranked New Jersey-based hospital system on the list.
The prestigious list, which includes some of the country’s best-known and most innovative corporations such as Google, Wegmans, Zappos.com, Microsoft, and DreamWorks, will appear on newsstands on Monday, January 23, 2012.
A major focus of the previous year for Atlantic Health System was to create a healing culture throughout the system that would include employees as well as patients. Key to this endeavor was PRIDE, an initiative to enhance the patient experience in a healing culture, which blended Atlantic Health System's mission, vision, shared values and performance. Through a number of programs and activities, employees were able to explore, define and showcase the virtues of Professionalism, Respect, Involvement, Dignity and Excellence in what they do.
In May 2011, following the merger which brought Newton Medical Center into the Atlantic family, Atlantic Health System further acknowledged the organization’s progress as one of the largest health care institutions in New Jersey by re-naming each of its hospitals as medical centers. This change was made to better reflect the breadth of services that are offered at each facility – services that are in large part due to the high level of expertise of their employees.

To pick the 100 Best Companies to Work For, Fortune partners with the Great Place to Work Institute to conduct the most extensive employee survey in corporate America; 280 firms participated in this year’s survey.
Two-thirds of a company’s score is based on the results of the institute’s Trust Index survey, which is sent to a random sample of employees from each company. The survey asks questions related to their attitudes about management’s credibility, job satisfaction, and camaraderie.
A great deal of Atlantic Health’s placement on the list is due to the overwhelmingly positive feedback that employees provided for this portion of the survey, having reported high marks from workers regarding issues including pride and camaraderie in the company.
Driving employee satisfaction, in part, is the organization’s efforts to recognize accomplishments, as well as numerous personal and professional development programs. One of these recognition efforts is the enhanced VALUE program, which rewards great ideas by employees that lead to better patient care, cost saving measures or other beneficial results.
Other recognition efforts include the “25 Year Club,” an initiative in which, each year, Atlantic Health System holds a celebration for employees who have been with the company for 25 years or more. In 2011, celebrity Bill Rancic, the first winner of the TV program “The Apprentice,” spoke to employees at the Club’s annual celebration.
The other third of the scoring is based on responses to the institute’s Culture Audit, which includes detailed questions about pay and benefit programs and a series of open-ended questions about hiring practices, methods of internal communication, training, recognition programs, and diversity efforts. Other benefits that are well regarded by Atlantic Health System employees include child and elder care, employee assistance programs, and tuition reimbursement.
Developmental programs offered to employees include free webinars, mentoring and more than 30 free classes and more than 100 free sessions, in a variety of topics, such as communications, computer skills, financial, management and clinical skills, some of which are taught by internal faculty members who are experts in their field.
