Atlantic Health System Ranks Among Top 50 in 5th Year on FORTUNE® Magazine's '100 Best Companies to Work For®'

Morristown, NJ, January 2013 – Atlantic Health System, one of the largest health care systems in New Jersey, was ranked among the top 50 for the first time in five consecutive years on FORTUNE® magazine’s list of “100 Best Companies to Work For®.”

Atlantic Health System, the parent company of Morristown Medical Center in Morristown, Overlook Medical Center in Summit, Newton Medical Center in Newton, and Goryeb Children’s Hospital, ranked 49 this year on the prestigious list, which includes some of the country’s best-known and most innovative corporations such as Google, Wegmans, Mercedes-Benz USA and DreamWorks. The list will appear on newsstands on Monday, January 21, 2013.

Ranking among the top 50 companies for the first time, Atlantic Health System scored higher in the FORTUNE survey this year, highlighting strong confidence among employees.

“The understanding that our employees are our greatest assets is reinforced at all levels of our organization,” said Andrew Kovach, vice president, Human Resources and chief administrative officer, Atlantic Health System.

“While many companies in the last five years have struggled to simply navigate a tumultuous economy and monumental changes in the health care field, we remained committed to the belief that a great work environment – in which employees are fulfilled personally and professionally – leads to success,” Kovach said. “Our employees have reaffirmed this belief, not only through five straight years of recognition in FORTUNE, but by making Atlantic Health System a recognized leader in health care.”

Among the most notable developments in Atlantic Health System’s application to FORTUNE this year was the inclusion of more than 1,000 employees of Newton Medical Center who were able to take the FORTUNE survey for the first time this year since the merger with Atlantic Health System in mid-2011. This inspired the design for the culture audit portion of Atlantic Health System's FORTUNE application – a family tree, with departments symbolized as sturdy branches and employees as fresh leaves.

To pick the 100 Best Companies to Work For, FORTUNE partners with the Great Place to Work Institute to conduct the most extensive employee survey in corporate America; 259 firms participated in this year’s survey.

Two-thirds of a company’s score is based on the results of the institute’s Trust Index survey, which is sent to a random sample of employees from each company. The survey asks questions related to their attitudes about management’s credibility, job satisfaction and camaraderie. The other third is based on responses to the institute’s Culture Audit, which includes detailed questions about pay and benefit programs and a series of open-ended questions about hiring practices, methods of internal communication, training, recognition programs and diversity efforts.

Driving the high marks in employee satisfaction at Atlantic Health, in part, is the organization’s efforts to recognize accomplishments, such as the new PRIDE in Action Award, which rewards employees who demonstrate superior customer service, strong leadership and success in their area of expertise, or the enhanced “Behind the Scenes” Award, which recognizes a team or department whose work plays a critical, yet subtle role.

Atlantic Health System offers its employees several opportunities to develop and enhance their professional skills and careers, as well as their personal lives and well-being.

The organization offers a mentorship program in which seasoned employees volunteer to become mentors to share their expertise and experience with aspiring leaders at Atlantic Health System. The organization also features a faculty academy, in which employees who are well-known experts in their respective fields volunteer as internal speakers who share their knowledge with others. Similarly, a physician leadership academy helps physicians strengthen their roles within the organization.

For employees who are interested in transferring to another position, Atlantic Health System offers “lunch and learn” sessions that include helpful knowledge on new careers, resume writing and interview skills.

Other recent offerings have included:

  • Employee Health Assessments – Employees are offered an opportunity to learn about and improve their overall health through screenings for factors like blood sugar and cholesterol

  • CareKits for all Stages of Life – Special kits designed to assist employees with various life events, such as expecting a baby, newborns, child safety, elder care and active lifestyles; for example, the New Baby CareKit provides educational materials as well as a photo frame, a onesie, bibs and a nightlight

  • Employee Relief Fund – A fund set up to provide money and assistance to fellow Atlantic Health System employees when a tragedy or catastrophic event occurs

  • Free immunizations, including the annual flu vaccine

Atlantic Health System’s commitment to its employees, patients and community was further underscored in 2012 in the wake of Superstorm Sandy. As its employees felt the effects of the catastrophic weather no less than others throughout the area, the organization took steps before, during and after the storm to help employees in need and ensure that its hospitals were staffed to provide high-quality care for patients and the community.

This included providing shelter and hundreds of meals for staff and physicians who stayed at the hospitals throughout the storm and afterward. AHS security also worked with local authorities to secure local gas stations to supply critical hospital staff and municipal emergency workers. Security and internal communications staff also provided constant updates to employees on weather alerts, road closures, locations of available gas, emergency resources and important phone numbers, as well as urgent patient and physician notifications.
