Morristown Medical Center Ranked for the First Time as a Top Hospital Nationwide by U.S. News for Cardiology & Heart Surgery, Gynecology

MORRISTOWN, NJ, JULY 2012 – U.S. News & World Report ranked Morristown Medical Center as a top hospital nationwide for cardiology, heart surgery and gynecology, as reported today in the publication’s annual Best Hospitals list. Comprehensive services that offer the latest research and care for chronically and critically ill patients and the start of a cardiology fellowship program have led to Morristown Medical Center’s first-time inclusion on the U.S. News – national list. U.S. News ranks the nation's top 50 hospitals in select specialties.

“U.S. News & World Report’s recognition of Morristown Medical Center as a top hospital in the nation for cardiac and gynecologic services and as a destination hospital in the region is a testament to our dedication to providing superior patient care,” said David Shulkin, MD, president, Morristown Medical Center, vice president, Atlantic Health System. “We take pride not only in providing our patients with the highest quality medical care, but also in offering the latest diagnostic and treatment tools within a warm, nurturing environment for our patients and their families.”

In addition to performing more open heart surgeries than any other hospital in New Jersey, Morristown Medical Center has proved itself as a top destination for cardiovascular care in the state and in the New York metropolitan area. The Gagnon Cardiovascular Institute at Morristown Medical Center is the only hospital in New Jersey and one of just 20 across the country to offer three minimally-invasive treatment options for heart valve repair and replacement for patients who are ineligible to undergo open heart surgery. The hospital also has been selected as one of 60 hospitals in the country to participate in a new trial that could potentially permanently lower blood pressure for patients with chronic hypertension.

Gynecologic services at Morristown Medical Center also have increased over the last several years with the addition of nationally-recognized physicians in the area of urogynecology, including the use of robotic surgery for the treatment of urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse. The Women’s Cancer Center at Morristown Medical Center and Overlook Medical Center also was selected to participate in a national ovarian cancer screening trial, which evaluates periodic blood tests that may be helpful in the early detection of ovarian cancer.

The hospital rankings, said U.S. News Health Rankings Editor Avery Comarow, are like a GPS-type aid to help steer patients to hospitals with strong skills in the procedures and medical conditions that present the biggest challenges. “All of these hospitals are the kinds of medical centers that should be on your list when you need the best care,” Comarow said. “They are where other hospitals send the toughest cases.”

The rankings were published by U.S. News in collaboration with RTI International, a research organization based in Research Triangle Park, N.C. Highlights of the 2012-13 rankings will appear in the U.S. News Best Hospitals 2013 guidebook, to go on sale in August.
