Morristown, NJ, June 2013 – The American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN), Aliso Viejo, Calif., has conferred a gold-level Beacon Award for Excellence on the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Goryeb Children’s Hospital in Morristown, NJ. The Beacon Award for Excellence – a significant milestone on the path to exceptional patient care and a healthy work environment – recognizes unit caregivers who successfully improve patient outcomes and align practices with AACN’s six standards for a healthy work environment. Units that achieve this three-year, three-level award with gold, silver and bronze designations meet national criteria consistent with Magnet Recognition, the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award and the National Quality Healthcare Award.
AACN President Kathryn E. Roberts, RN, MSN, CNS, CCRN, CCNS, applauds the commitment of the caregivers at the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Goryeb Children’s Hospital for working together to meet and exceed the high standards set forth by the Beacon Award for Excellence. These dedicated health care professionals join other members of the exceptional community of nurses who set the standard for optimal patient care.

The gold-level Beacon Award for Excellence earned by the PICU at Goryeb Children’s Hospital signifies excellent and sustained unit performance and patient outcomes. The PICU at Goryeb Children’s Hospital earned a gold award by meeting the following evidence-based Beacon Award for Excellence criteria:

Goryeb Children’s Hospital’s PICU provides state-of-the-art care to infants, children, adolescents, and young adults through age 21 with life-threatening illness and injury. A nine-bed unit, the team treats more than 600 children annually. The PICU features advanced technologies for continuous monitoring of respiratory, cardiovascular and neurologic functions. Staffed with board-certified pediatric critical care physicians, the PICU offers round-the-clock coverage and is supported with a multidisciplinary team of highly-skilled nurses, respiratory therapists, social workers, case managers, child life therapists, physical/occupational therapists, speech therapists, nutritionists and pharmacists.

The other Beacon Award designations are bronze and silver. Recipients who earn a bronze-level award demonstrate success in developing, deploying and integrating unit-based performance criteria for optimal outcomes; silver-level awardees demonstrate continuous learning and effective systems to achieve optimal patient care. Atlantic Health System’s Morristown Medical Center has earned Beacon awards in the following areas: Coronary Care Unit, silver, 2011; Gagnon A (cardiac unit), silver, 2013; Medical and Surgical ICU, gold, 2011.
