Overlook Medical Center Ranked No.1 Hospital in New Jersey for Stroke and Neurological Disorders
SUMMIT, NJ, MARCH 2012 – Overlook Medical Center was ranked the top hospital in the state for treatment of neurological disorders for the third consecutive year and voted for the second time as the No.1 hospital for stroke. Overlook ranked third overall among all hospitals in the state and therefore, ranked as the top hospital in Union County. Overlook was also ranked among the top three hospitals in New Jersey across several categories, including high-risk pregnancy, breast cancer, prostate cancer, hip and knee repair, and treatment of heart failure, among others by Castle Connolly Medical Ltd., one of the nation’s most respected health care research and information companies. These rankings are published in Inside Jersey magazine’s April 2012 issue. Atlantic Health System’s hospitals, which include Morristown, Overlook, and Newton Medical Centers, and Goryeb Children’s Hospital, placed in the top three in nearly every category ranked by Castle Connolly.

Overlook Medical Center has proved itself as a top destination for neurological and stroke care in New Jersey and one of the best in the New York metropolitan area. Overlook has the largest group of neuroscience experts on staff fellowship trained and specializing in neurology, neurosurgery, neuro-radiology, neuropathology, neuro-oncology, neuro-intensive care, pain management and neuro-cognitive disorders. In addition to housing the most advanced diagnostic and treatment tools in the country for brain tumors, stroke and epilepsy, Atlantic Neuroscience Institute is engaging in extensive, on-going research to offer patients the most advanced diagnostic and treatment services available. Physicians at Overlook’s Stroke Center are investigating new mechanical clot removal devices, using stents to open blocked arteries and developing new medical therapies for people who have suffered a stroke.
At the Brain Tumor Center of New Jersey, experts are refining state-of-the-art treatments, including vaccine trials, for patients with malignant brain tumors, newly diagnosed glioblastoma, malignant astrocytoma, recurrent malignant astrocytoma and mixed tumors.
Within the movement disorders program, physicians are exploring new drug therapies for restless legs syndrome, Tourette syndrome, dystonia and the use of integrative medicine for patients with Parkinson’s disease. A study looking at gene expression in children with autism is also underway.
In addition, other physicians at Atlantic Neuroscience Institute are researching how Lyme disease works and the use of innovative coils and other endovascular tools to treat brain aneurysms.

Overlook Medical Center and sister hospital Morristown Medical Center, are categorized among hospitals with more than 350 beds, and Newton Medical Center ranked in the 350 beds or fewer category.

Nearly 1,200 licensed physicians in New Jersey participated in the online survey by Castle Connolly, which was distributed in fall 2011. Physicians cast more than 20,000 votes on the treatment of specific medical conditions and top overall hospitals in the state. The results were divided into two categories: hospitals with more than 350 beds and those with less than 350 beds.
