Overlook Medical Center Invites Participants in the “Healthy Neighborhoods” Initiative

May 19, 2014, Summit, NJ – Overlook Medical Center invites community organizations and groups to participate in the “Healthy Neighborhoods” initiative.  Neighborhood-based organizations may request up to $10,000 per project.

“The vision of Atlantic Health System to empower our communities to be healthiest in the nation requires us to think outside the walls of our facilities and into the multiple contexts in which the people we serve live, work, learn, and play,” says William Neigher, vice-president, System Development and Chief System Officer, Atlantic Health System.

Research has demonstrated that neighborhoods affect health and well-being. These effects include the physical environment (e.g. access to parks and safe streets), the social environment (e.g. connections between residents) and the service environment (e.g. access to services such as supermarkets and public transportation.

The Healthy Neighborhoods initiative will invest in improving the neighborhoods in our communities by supplying funds to neighborhood-based organizations to create healthier spaces for their residents. Throughout the grant year, in addition to funding, Neighborhood Teams will receive on-going training and support from the Atlantic Healthy Neighborhoods Team and have opportunity to interact with other Healthy Neighborhoods grantees.

Any neighborhood-based organization may apply for this funding. This may include neighborhood associations, faith-based communities, social service agencies or grassroots groups. To be eligible, submissions must:

  • Target a single, clearly-defined neighborhood within a 10-mile radius of Overlook Medical Center
  • Propose a project that has the potential to create healthier spaces
  • Include significant involvement from neighborhood residents in all aspects of the project
  • Work closely with a member of our Healthy Neighborhoods team
  • Attend quarterly meetings with other recipients of Healthy Neighborhoods’ grants
  • Track and report relevant data and fund usage
  • Start the project by August 1, 2014 and complete within one year.

Applications must be submitted by June16, 2014.  Applications will be graded on the following criteria:

The grant review process begins on July 1, 2014. Submitted applications must include the following information, each of which is graded and weighted evenly:

  • Description of need – Why the project is needed and what it hopes to change
  • Project description – What the project will accomplish and who will be responsible for each of its phases
  • Outcomes – How success will be measured
  • Budget – How the funds will be spent and if the project will be supplemented by other funding sources.

Up to $50,000 total will be awarded in 2014 under this program.
