Oral cancer may sometimes require the removal of part of the tongue, also known as a partial glossectomy or tongue-based resection. At Morristown Medical Center, we use the da Vinci® Surgical System for these procedures, which allows us to treat tongue cancer through the mouth without having to make incisions in the jaw or reposition the lower jaw bone.
This approach minimizes or eliminates the need for a tracheotomy, chemotherapy and radiation therapy. It also has less impact on the patient’s ability to speak or swallow after the procedure is completed.
Potential benefits of robotic transoral surgery (TORS) include:
- Less scarring, blood loss and pain
- Shorter hospital stay
- Quicker recovery time and return to daily activities
- Decreased risk of infection
