Electrophysiology and Cardiac Rhythm Management

Cardiac Electrophysiology

At Gagnon Cardiovascular Institute at Morristown Medical Center, our cardiac rhythm management team excels at evaluating patients’ heart pace, rate and electrical patterns. Using innovative technologies, our physicians:

  • Diagnose complex heart rhythm problems
  • Map, record and store precise recordings of the heart's electrical activity
  • Store three-dimensional images on high-definition computer systems for precise diagnosis and treatment
  • Evaluate complex pacemakers and automatic defibrillators, including biventricular systems (CRT)
  • Perform tilt table tests to aid in the identification of causes of fainting spells

Among the technologies we use to diagnose heart rhythm irregularities are:

  • Electrophysiology (EP) study – identifies patients at risk for arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats). Electrode catheters are inserted through veins and arteries into the heart chambers to pinpoint and map out the area where arrhythmias originate
  • Arrhythmia mapping – creates an electrical map of the origination, frequency and speed of the heart's natural electrical impulses, using electrode catheters
  • Tilt table testing – helps determine whether syncope may be caused by low blood pressure associated with or independent of a slow heartbeat, often due to a miscommunication between the brain, heart and blood vessels

Our Cardiac Rhythm Management Program doctors have participated in an extensive number of clinical trials that have helped expand treatment options for patients with heart rhythm disturbances. These trials include studies initiated by the National Institutes of Health and industry-sponsored clinical trials involving pacemakers, implantable defibrillators, electrode systems and antiarrhythmic medications.
