Arterial Studies | Blood Flow Measurement | Artery Evaluation

Arterial Studies

Arteries, which carry blood away from the heart, can become thick and less elastic over time, diminishing blood flow to the rest of the body. Several diagnostic tests are used by Gagnon Cardiovascular Institute at Morristown and Overlook Medical Centers to evaluate the arteries:

  • Arterial duplex imaging – uses two types of ultrasound, standard ultrasound and Doppler ultrasound, to produce two-dimensional images of the arteries and view and measure blood flow

  • Arterial pulse volume recording with segmental blood pressures (arterial PVR or Doppler) – measures blood volume changes using cuffs placed at multiple locations along the leg

  • Skin perfusion – evaluates potential for healing by taking a blood pressure reading of very small arteries, called capillaries, in the leg or the foot

  • Vasodilation – measures blood pressure at rest and after mild exercise using blood pressure cuffs placed on the legs
