Global Child Health Program

Faculty Supervisor: Mary Ann LoFrumento, MD

Experiences in global health are available as call-free blocks of one to four weeks. Atlantic Health System offers resident programs for travel to Honduras (Shoulder to Shoulder) with Dr. Susan Kaye, medical director of graduate medical education and chair of family practice, and Haiti (Hands Up for Haiti) with Dr. LoFrumento, to work in well-established clinics. Pediatric residents in their second and third years may make arrangements to work in other resource-poor countries. In recent years we have had residents work in a hospital in Nigeria, an HIV program in Ghana, a medical mission in Vietnam, a vaccination program in Haiti, a pediatric hospital in India, and a rural area of Venezuela. Funding for international travel for medical missions is available to our residents from the Benjamin H. Josephson, MD Fund.

Global Health Certificate Program
For those residents with a special interest in international health, a global health curriculum has been created and is available as a self-directed preparatory program. The program focuses on the general principles relating to the health of children in developing countries, as well as how these principles apply to underserved populations in the United States. The curriculum was created using competency-based goals and objectives developed by the American Academy of Pediatrics’ Section on International Health. For interested and motivated residents, the certificate program was developed to enhance the knowledge of pediatric residents in the general principles of child health in developing countries and to prepare them for international travel for medical missions.

The program consists of a series of didactic lectures presented to all of the residents, carefully selected reading materials, and the completion of a faculty-supervised clinical, educational or research project. Residents must participate in at least one global health experience during their residency to be eligible for this certificate.
