Family Surgery Program
Children who need surgery are usually anxious about it, and so are their loved ones. The Family Surgery Program at Goryeb Children's Hospital at Morristown Medical Center and Goryeb Children's Center at Overlook Medical Center can help prepare your child for surgery and alleviate some of the stress and anxiety of a hospital stay for both of you. This innovative service – the first of its kind in New Jersey – has been helping make the surgical experience a little easier for parents and children for more than a decade.
We help patients and their families become familiarized with the operating room as they learn what to expect before, during and after surgery. Our program creates a relaxed, non-threatening atmosphere that encourages children to communicate their feelings about hospitalization and develop a sense of security. On our age-appropriate tours, patients will be introduced to our hospital personnel, medical equipment and routines. In addition, we provide a pre-operative teaching program, including a slide presentation with basic educational information designed for younger audiences.
Orientation programs for children, teenagers, and families are regularly scheduled by contacting the Child Life Program.
