Kid-FIT: Health Management
Exercise and a balanced diet go a long way in keeping growing bodies healthy and strong. The Kid-FIT program at Goryeb Children's Hospital at Morristown Medical uses individualized intervention strategies, lectures and psychosocial support to teach children and adolescents how to make healthy lifestyle choices.
More than 20 million American children are considered overweight. Today's children lead more sedentary, less active lives, and eat diets rich in fat and sugar. Those habits have led to an alarming increase in childhood heart disease, diabetes, obesity, cancer and metabolic X syndrome.
Designed for children who are overweight or who may be at risk for these diseases, Kid-FIT has programs for those ages six through 21 years old. Kid-FIT is one of the only pediatric programs in the country that uses the state-of-the-art Body Media SenseWear WMS® technology to accurately assess every child's needs and establish individual goals.
How Kid-FIT Works
There are two Kid-FIT programs: children ages six-11 and teens ages 12 - 21. The Kid-FIT program for children ages six -11 is called “Family Fit” and requires the involvement of the entire family to help make changes in the home. Teens ages 12 - 21 can do the program on their own and make decisions regarding their treatment plans.
To participate in Kid-FIT, your child needs a referral from his or her pediatrician. Once he or she is accepted into the program, you and your child attend a mandatory orientation session that introduces our philosophy, overviews the program structure, and provides discussion on goal setting and parental expectations in the achievement of healthy living strategies.
The first step is assessing each child's current lifestyle, including eating habits, and social and emotional issues. After the assessment, our team of experts ' exercise physiologist, nutritionist, social worker and the Kid-FIT medical director ' create an individualized treatment plan based on the child's unique needs, incorporating exercise, nutrition and counseling based on the results of his or her assessment.
The Kid-FIT team evaluates every child up to four times a year to assess his or her progress and make necessary adjustments to the treatment plan. Each child is eligible to use our services and facilities until he or she reaches the age of 21.
Parents and caregivers learn how to make healthy dietary changes and incorporate exercise into the every day life of the family in addition to psychosocial support and intervention to help families deal with difficult emotional issues and achieve their goals.

There is a minimal fee for each lifestyle assessment; financial assistance may be available.
