Faculty

The Morristown Medical Center Department of Internal Medicine consists of approximately 300 salaried and volunteer physicians. All have been board-certified in both internal medicine and, where applicable, a subspecialty. Many of our physicians are devoted to teaching and are actively involved in clinical research.

Our full-time faculty members are very involved in our residents' education. Their diverse educational and specialty backgrounds expose our residents to a variety of disciplines:

Stanley Fiel, MD, Regional Chair, Department of Medicine, Atlantic Health System

Dr. Fiel attended the Medical College of Pennsylvania, completed his residency training at Temple University Hospital, and undertook his fellowship training in pulmonary and critical care medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Prior to joining the Atlantic Health System team in 2003, he was the chairman of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Hahnemann and Drexel Schools of Medicine. Dr. Fiel is world-renowned for his expertise in both chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and the management of cystic fibrosis in adults.

Donna Astiz, MD, Program Director
Dr. Astiz attended medical school at Creighton University and completed her residency training at University of Southern California/Los Angeles County Medical Center. She has held academic faculty appointments at several university hospitals, including Albany Medical Center and Chicago Medical School. Dr. Astiz came to Atlantic Health System in 1989 as the ambulatory director for the residency program, with a special interest in health care access for the poor, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) medicine, and resident education. In 2003, Dr. Astiz was named program director of the residency program. She currently holds the title of Counselor in the Association of Program Directors of Internal Medicine (APDIM).

Jacqueline Darcey, MD, Associate Program Director
Dr. Darcey worked in research and development of monoclonal antibodies at Hoffman LaRoche before attending medical school at SUNY Health Science Center at Brooklyn School of Medicine. She completed her residency at Morristown Medical Center, followed by a year as chief resident, focusing on educational innovations. Dr. Darcey's interests also include simulation training, research education for residents and the development of online curricular and learning resources. She has additional responsibilities as an outpatient preceptor, as well as a hospitalist with Morristown Academic Hospitalist Associates (MAHA). Dr. Darcey was named associate program director in 2003 and is a member of the national E-Learning Committee for the Association of Program Directors in Internal Medicine (APDIM).

David Kuo, MD, FACP, Associate Program Director
Dr. Kuo received his MD from Brown University School of Medicine, and completed a primary care internal medicine residency at Yale-New Haven Hospital and a general internal medicine fellowship at Rhode Island Hospital. Dr. Kuo is a co-director of the medical student clerkship for the Department of Medicine and remains a member of the Transitional Medicine Residency Review Committee. In addition to his administrative duties, he precepts residents and students at IMFA in addition to seeing his own primary care patients at the faculty practice. He has been on the faculty since 1998. Dr. Kuo was named associate program director in 2008.
