Morristown Medical Center: The Patient Experience
Morristown Medical Center
Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship
A message from:
Mark S. Rosenthal, MD, FACC, Program Director, Cardiovascular Fellowship Program
Atlantic Health System
Thank you for taking the time to learn about our cardiology fellowship. I liken our program to a small liberal arts college nested inside a large university. The training is personalized and intense. Our overriding goal is fellow education with a focus on case-based learning and close one-on-one training with faculty members who see fellow education as a privilege and joy. As program director, my sole task is to take freshly minted internal medicine residents and, over three years, turn each of them into highly skilled and independently thinking cardiologists ready to tackle the full scope of cardiovascular medicine. The spectrum of clinical material at Gagnon Cardiovascular Institute spans the full range of inherited and acquired cardiovascular disease. Our facilities and the breadth of procedural expertise are among the finest in the nation. It is truly the best of both worlds in cardiovascular fellow education.
Take note, this is not a fellowship program for trainees who would prefer to fly under the radar. In our program, we get to know each of our fellows’ educational needs, and we take great pride in fostering their the professional growth. Every cardiology fellow in every training program in the country hits snags along the way. In our program, we are not only aware of our trainee’s strengths, but we are also quick to identify areas where there is need for improvement. No essential professional competency is considered too trivial to warrant assessment and intervention when needed to bring someone up to speed.
While our program is small in fellow number, it is huge in scope and possibility. It was created by cardiologists who aspired to bring the best features of our collective training experiences into one that captures the goals any fellow would hope to achieve during three years of training.
The program is flexible by the very nature of its newness. Our fellows will never hear the words “we’ve always done things this way” in defense of an imperfect aspect of the training environment. If there is an area in need of improvement, we make changes quickly and with the input of our current fellows.
We are fully committed to helping each of our fellows reach and exceed his or her professional goals. I personally look forward to meeting and getting to know highly qualified applicants who are up to the challenge of our intensive learning environment and who are sincerely interested in becoming members of the Atlantic Health System Cardiovascular Fellowship family.

As a national leader in the research and treatment of cardiac disease, Gagnon Cardiovascular Institute at Morristown Medical Center offers a cardiovascular disease fellowship. Our program is designed to train fellows to provide compassionate, patient-centered and evidence-based care in a state-of-the-art referral center.
At Gagnon Cardiovascular Institute, the largest cardiac program in the state, specially-trained, nationally-renowned cardiologists provide instruction in advanced cardiovascular medicine. Fellows learn how to evaluate and manage patients with a broad range of cardiovascular conditions. They are also trained in advanced imaging, including echocardiography, nuclear cardiology, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT); electrophysiology; heart failure treatment, including left ventricular assist devices; and interventional cardiology, including transcatheter interventions for structural heart disease.
In addition, fellows receive instruction in emergency cardiac care, pre-operative evaluation for both cardiac and non-cardiac surgery, heart wellness educational programs, cardiac rehabilitation and our award-winning Women’s Heart Awareness Program.
We believe that our fellows are integral to the success of our program. For this reason, we seek candidates who will benefit from our challenging academic environment and contribute to a team approach. At Gagnon Cardiovascular Institute, hands-on experience and our faculty’s one-on-one approach to teaching will allow you to develop to your full potential as a cardiologist.
