Emergency Ultrasound

Morristown Medical Center Department of Emergency Medicine’s Ultrasound Fellowship is a one-year program and is the first of its kind in New Jersey.

Application Process

The application for the ultrasound fellowship that starts on July 1 is due early in the year on February 1. A committee comprised of the Morristown Medical Department of Emergency Medicine (EM) Chair, ultrasound fellowship-trained attending physicians, EM Residency Director and EM attending physician group interviews potential fellows; only five will be accepted into the program. Applications must include:

  • Curriculum vitae
  • Personal statement
  • Copy of United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) 1, 2 and 3 scores
  • Medical license, if applicable
  • Three letters of recommendation

Certification Requirements

Fellows are required to have or obtain the follow certifications:

  • Advanced trauma life support (ATLS)
  • Advanced cardiac life support (ACLS)
  • Basic life support (BLS)
  • Pediatric advanced life support (PALS) and advanced pediatric life support (APLS); instructor preferred

Fellows provide an academic and administrative leadership role in the department of emergency medicine, participating in weekly emergency medicine residency conferences and developing an ultrasound curriculum for emergency medicine residents. Concurrently, our fellows hold six clinical conferences and one journal club with the emergency medicine residents throughout the academic year. Fellows are also responsible for an original ultrasound research paper with the ultimate goal of presenting that research at a national meeting.

Program Director

Hetal Patel, MD is the emergency ultrasound fellowship director. He is trained in emergency ultrasound and is a faculty member of the Emergency Medicine Residency Program at Morristown Medical Center.

Salary and Benefits

Fellows work two clinical shifts per week in the department of emergency medicine as an employee of Emergency Medical Associates for an approximate salary of $80,000 per year. Fellows are entitled to a two-week vacation, with the approval of the fellowship director.
