Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a very treatable disorder. Atlantic Health System Pulmonary Center's highly-qualified health care professionals are here to help.
COPD is the fourth leading cause of death in the United States and includes diseases characterized by progressive decline in lung function, such as emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Emphysema is caused by damage of the support structures and gas-exchange units (alveoli) within the lung, along with obstruction of the airways. Chronic bronchitis is caused by inflammation in the lungs, which leads to the narrowing of the airways and increased mucus production. Many people with COPD have symptoms of both conditions. In fact, some share certain characteristics with asthma, but they are fundamentally different disorders that require accurate diagnosis and proper treatment.
