Pulmonary rehabilitation is a supervised program of exercise and education designed specifically for people with lung disorders. Although most patients enrolled in these programs have COPD (emphysema and chronic bronchitis), patients with pulmonary fibrosis, chronic asthma, bronchiectasis, lung cancer and many other lung diseases can also benefit.
Over time, the pulmonary rehabilitation sessions' duration and intensity of exercise is gradually increased. By the end of the program, most participants are able to do significantly more activity with less shortness of breath and have an improved quality of life.
Insurance coverage for pulmonary rehabilitation varies, but most insurance plans cover at least part of the rehabilitation program.
