Pre-Operative Preparation

Prior to surgery at Morristown Medical Center or Morristown Medical Ambulatory Surgery Center (111 Madison Ave.), you will meet with your surgeon. We encourage you to bring a family member or caregiver to all of your pre-operative appointments. Come prepared by writing down questions and bringing your insurance cards.

Be ready to discuss the following:

  • Risks and benefits of surgery
  • Alternatives to surgery
  • Allergies that you have
  • Prescription and over-the-counter medications that you currently take (bring a list with name, dosage and frequency)
  • Current and previous medical and surgical history
  • Do you use alcohol, tobacco or illegal drugs? (What you say is kept confidential.)
  • Personal or family history of high fever or other complications during surgery
  • Could you be pregnant?

Health Care Proxy and Living Will
We encourage you to complete an advanced directive/living will, which appoints a trusted person to make health care decisions for you if you are unable to do so. You can obtain this form at any registration area of the hospital.

Informed Consent
Either at your surgeon's office or at the hospital, you will be asked to sign a document called “informed consent.” This provides confirmation that you and your surgeon have discussed the operation and alternative treatments, that you understand the potential risks and complications associated with the surgery, and that you have arrived at the decision to proceed at your own free will.

Pre-Operative Testing
During your pre-operative (pre-op) appointment, your surgeon will determine the need for any testing. If you have any laboratory test or radiology studies at home, bring them to your appointment. Routine tests and procedures may be required to determine your state of health as well as compare previous results with your current health status.

The following tests, if ordered, may help your health care team evaluate your body's stability for surgery and anesthesia:

  • Chest x-ray: provides a picture of your lungs, heart and other organs. It is sometimes necessary to help determine if your lungs are ready for surgery and anesthesia.
  • Blood and urine tests: provide important information about your body's blood cells and body chemistry. Although you may have had these tests recently, often it is necessary to repeat them when preparing you for surgery.
  • ECG (electrocardiogram): sometimes called EKG, provides important information about how your heart is functioning.

Be aware that these tests are not necessary for every patient having surgery. The surgeon and anesthesiologist use established criteria based on gender, age and medical history to decide who needs these tests.

Patients 20 years and younger should report to the Goryeb Children's Hospital for testing; no appointment necessary.

Pre-Procedure Evaluation Center (21 years and older):
111 Madison Avenue, 4th floor
Morristown, NJ
Appointments are required.

If using Morristown Medical Center for pre-op testing, please:

  • Call our testing schedulers for an appointment at 973-971-6801.
  • Have your testing form handy when making your testing appointment; we may need you to read important details on the form.
  • Bring your testing form, insurance cards, form of identification and list of your medications to your testing appointment.
  • Fasting is sometimes required for testing; ask your surgeon or a scheduler if this is necessary.
  • There are occasions when we will require you to return to the Pre-Procedure Evaluation Center for additional testing, closer to your surgery day. We will help you make those arrangements and expedite your return visit.
