Treatment Options for Acne

Teenager with acneAt Atlantic Health System's Acne Treatment and Research Center, effective acne management begins with an in-depth evaluation with one of our dermatologists, who will advise the patient on every aspect of skin care. Often, treatment will consist of a combination of topical and/or oral medications, lasers and light therapy, medical facials, routine skin care, dietary changes and stress management.

Medications

Depending upon the results of the evaluation, our specialists may prescribe several medications to simultaneously unclog skin pores, kill bacteria, reduce sebum and inflammation, and correct hormonal imbalances. Types of medications, which may be available over the counter or prescribed, include:

The Acne Treatment and Research Center believes in avoiding antibiotic use whenever possible in order to reduce the risk of antibiotic resistance.

Routine Skin Care Management

Skin care products have the potential to improve acne symptoms, enhance the skin barrier, reduce medication side effects and improve overall quality of life. Our specialists will discuss with patients which cleansers, moisturizers, sunscreens, cosmetics or hair care products may be right for them. When appropriate, cosmetic consultations will be offered and medical facials recommended.

Dietary Assessments

Although the role that diet plays in acne is not yet fully understood, it is possible that dietary alterations could be beneficial. For that reason, probiotics, prebiotics and other supplements may be recommended.

Stress Management

There is some evidence that acne severity can be related to stress. Our dermatologists will evaluate each patient’s lifestyle and recommend stress reduction techniques as necessary.

Individual priorities and concerns are important when evaluating skin care options, and patients should always consult with their doctor before beginning any acne treatment.
