Guided imagery uses the power of the imagination to mobilize or actualize the body’s own healing potential. After quieting the mind, the practitioner -- and eventually the patient -- will use positive images to visualize the desired health outcome. Images may be literal or abstract; various images may be explored to find the most useful one(s). The body does not differentiate between sensory images in our minds and physical sensation, so both are perceived to be “real,” resulting in physiologic changes. Studies have demonstrated that guided imagery, which is effective for both adults and children, can relieve pain, improve immune function and assist outcome in fertility procedures.
