The Atlantic Respiratory Institute offers a full state-of-the-art allergy program dedicated to helping respiratory patients with their allergies.
Allergies are the result of an over-sensitive immune system and may be a major trigger of respiratory illness. Normally, the immune system protects the body against harmful matter. However, allergies occur when the immune system reacts to substances called allergens, which are harmless for most people. An allergen may be solely seasonal (such as tree, grass or weed pollen) or perennial (such as cats, dogs or dust mites).
If you are allergic to something, your body will react by fighting that substance. It produces antibodies to stimulate the release of histamine and other chemicals to fight the allergen; those chemicals produce classic allergic symptoms, such as hives and head congestion. Other allergic reactions include runny noses and sneezing. More seriously, asthma, sinus diseases and sleep apnea may become more pronounced. Asthma patients should be evaluated for allergies, as well as other asthma triggers.
At Atlantic Health System’s Pulmonary Center, we have pulmonologists who specialize in caring for patients with allergies. Diagnostic and treatment services are available at Morristown Medical Center, Overlook Medical Center and Newton Medical Center.
