Diagnosing a sleep disorder depends largely upon the patient’s symptoms and may require a variety of tests. At Atlantic Health Sleep Centers at Morristown Medical Center, Overlook Medical Center, Chilton Medical Center and Hackettstown Medical Center, we assess patients using:
- Physical examination
- Detailed review of medication use and family history
- Sleep study, or polysomnography, if appropriate
In some cases, we may ask patients to keep a detailed history of their sleep patterns in a diary, journal or medical device for one to two weeks to aid in the diagnosis.
An overnight sleep study is one of the most valuable tests used by our centers. It is a painless and non-invasive recording of the quantity and quality of an individual’s sleep. The data obtained from these studies helps us diagnose and treat sleep-related breathing disorders, movement disorders, difficulty initiating or maintaining sleep, and behavioral sleep disorders. Sleep studies can be performed at our sleep centers or in the comfort of your home.
