Morristown Medical Center: The Patient Experience
Morristown Medical Center
Your surgeon is the skilled member who leads the operating room (OR) team. In some instances, due to developments during surgery or immediately after, the surgeon may request the services of physician consultants, such as a pulmonologist, hematologist, cardiologist or other medical specialist.
Your anesthesiologist specializes in the administration of anesthesia (medications that artificially cause the loss of sensation and usually consciousness, without loss of vital functions). Prior to surgery, your anesthesiologist will review your medical history and determine the best form of anesthesia for you. You will definitely meet with a member of our anesthesia team on the day of your surgery. For urgent questions, you can call the anesthesia department by dialing 973-971-5548.
Nurses are involved in multiple areas of your care and will work with all members of your team. You will have several nurses working with you, beginning in the Pre-Procedure Evaluation Center, then in the Surgical Access Unit (SAU), OR, Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU, “recovery room”), and finally on the patient care floor where you may stay after your operation.
These team members will assist you with your care by carrying out the directions of your nurse and surgeon. Typically they will complete your pre-op preps if required (e.g., skin shaving, enemas). Throughout your stay they will be available to help you with your activities of daily living (e.g., bathing, ambulating and assisting you with your meals).
Case and Care Manager (only for Morristown Medical Center surgery patients)
Your case/care manager is a registered nurse who will work with you and your family to provide smooth and effective delivery of care throughout your hospitalization.
Occupational, Respiratory and Physical Therapists (only for Morristown Medical Center surgery patients)
Specially trained therapists are available based on your individual needs and medical condition. They will assist you in achieving optimum health and recovery while hospitalized, as well as identify continued needs when discharged.
These team members comprise admission specialists, schedulers, documentation staff, specimen-processing technicians and clerical staff who assist you in easing your surgery experience at Morristown Medical Center.
