Risk Factors

Certain conditions – such as elevated blood pressure or cholesterol, diabetes, heart disease, smoking, a transient ischemic attack (TIA), lack of exercise, obesity, or a family history – put a person at greater risk for stroke. Multiple risk factors increase your chance of a stroke. Working with a health care professional to develop a healthier lifestyle can help you reduce your risk for stroke.

Stroke Risk Factors that can be Controlled:

  • An enlarged heart
  • Atrial fibrillation (heart rhythm disorder)
  • Carotid artery disease
  • Diabetes mellitus, which is often coupled with high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol and obesity
  • Excessive alcohol intake
  • Heart failure or coronary heart disease
  • High blood cholesterol
  • High blood pressure (hypertension)
  • Peripheral artery disease
  • Physical inactivity and obesity
  • Sickle cell disease
  • Smoking, including secondhand smoke
  • Some blood disorders: a high red blood cell count thickens the blood and makes clots more likely
