Learning About Neuro Trauma

In the United States, 99,000 people each year will sustain permanent damage from brain contusions. Car accidents are the number one cause of traumatic brain injury (TBI); sports or physical activities are the second most common cause; and assaults are third. For those who are over age 65, falls are the number one cause. Shaken baby syndrome is another form of TBI.

If you sustain a head or spinal cord injury, take it seriously. Loss of consciousness, even if just for a second, requires an immediate visit to the doctor. Watch for the following symptoms:

  • Decreased movement
  • Headache
  • Nausea, vomiting
  • Slurred speech
  • Restlessness
  • Increased drowsiness
  • Change in pupils
  • Confusion about the time or date
  • Memory loss
  • Numbness or tingling
  • Change in personality
  • Depression
  • Irritability
  • Other emotional and behavioral problems
  • Seizures

If any of these symptoms occur, see a doctor immediately.
