After a stroke, regular tasks – eating, bathing and dressing – may seem difficult or even impossible. At Morristown Medical Center, Overlook Medical Center, Newton Medical Center and Atlantic Rehabilitation, we can help these patients regain their independence with award-winning stroke rehabilitation.
Our teams of professionals provide a variety of outpatient services, including cognitive therapy, gait analysis, vestibular and balance training, and speech and swallowing therapy. They’ll help patients relearn functional as well as social skills and demonstrate ways to cope with any deficiencies in strength or muscle coordination.
Our stroke rehabilitation programs also utilize various technologies to help stroke patients recover:
- VitalStim® Therapy – certified speech-language pathologists use this technology to electrically stimulate the muscles of the throat to improve movement and control of the muscles used in swallowing
- Bioness® – a device placed on arm and/or leg muscles that delivers safe electrical stimulation to targeted areas to increase muscle function and strength
- LiteGait® – a partial weight-bearing walking and balance device that enables earlier walking in therapy for those who require additional assistance
- Wii™ -habilitation – patients can refine their skills through the use of Wii games and tasks
All therapies are available at Overlook Medical Center and Atlantic Rehabilitation. Newton Medical Center offers VitalStim Therapy and Wii-habilitation.
Stroke Rehabilitation Education Program
Atlantic Neuroscience Institute offers a stroke rehabilitation education program designed by our past stroke survivors and their families. By educating patients to identify and control risk factors, we can help them reduce their risk of secondary stroke. Each of our stroke patients receives a copy of the Stroke Survivor’s Handbook, which includes stroke educational materials as well as information on the recovery environment and the health care professionals involved in their treatment and care.
In addition, our patients are encouraged to participate in mind body services that complement and enhance traditional physical, occupational and speech therapies. Through a research study conducted in collaboration with Center for Well Being at Morristown and Overlook medical centers, we found that the use of Qi Gong in our stroke rehabilitation program reduced stress and increased patients’ functional levels.
