Digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT), sometimes referred to as a 3D mammogram, is a diagnostic tool that can detect small breast tumors, while decreasing false positives and the need for repeat mammograms. Newton Medical Center offers this cutting edge technology at its Center for Breast Health – the first of its kind in Sussex County, NJ.
DBT uses an X-ray to take multiple digital images of the breast in just seconds. This allows radiologists and breast imagers to examine the tissue in small slices with enhanced clarity and detail. Smaller tumors that would otherwise have been difficult to assess can now be identified in earlier stages, improving survival rates.
Patients who may benefit from a 3D mammogram include those who are at high-risk for developing breast cancer and/or have a history of needing follow-up diagnostic mammograms after a routine, annual screening.
