Diagnostic and Genetic Screening Tests for Cancer

At Newton Medical Center, our goal is to not only detect our patients’ cancer in earlier, more curable stages, but also to prevent malignancies from developing in the first place. Our diagnostic and genetic screening services include:

  • Cytogenetics laboratory – we study the genetic blueprint of a tumor cell in order to understand how it is likely to grow, allowing us to customize treatment plans

  • Computed tomography (CT) – sometimes called CAT scan, this noninvasive, painless X-ray procedure obtains cross-sectional images of body parts that cannot be seen on a standard X-ray

  • Endoscopy – used to identify and treat gastrointestinal cancers of the esophagus, stomach, colon and rectum

  • Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) – combines endoscopy and ultrasound technologies to obtain high-quality images of organs and more accurately discovers and stages cancers of the esophagus, lung, stomach, pancreas, bile duct and rectum

  • Fluoroscopy – uses X-rays to produce real-time video images of organs in motion

  • Genetic testing comprehensive genetic counseling and cancer risk assessment services are available at Carol G. Simon Cancer Center at Morristown Medical Center and Overlook Medical Center. Learn more >

  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) – a noninvasive medical test that uses magnetism, radio waves and a computer to produce cross-sectional images of body structures

  • Mammography – uses a low-dose X-ray system to examine breasts and aid in the early detection and diagnosis of breast diseases in women

  • Nuclear medicine – also called radionuclide imaging, this noninvasive test uses small amounts of radioactive material to diagnose a variety of diseases, including many types of cancer

  • Pathology – board-certified pathologists work with surgeons during and after surgery to detect malignancies in tissue

  • Ultrasound – evaluates breast abnormalities by revealing information about the shape, texture, and composition of tumors and cysts

When other specialized cancer services are necessary, Carol G. Simon Cancer Center at Morristown Medical Center and Overlook Medical Center can seamlessly provide care for our patients.
