Newton Medical Center: The Patient Experience
Unless otherwise noted, all of the below prenatal classes take place at Morristown Medical Center or Overlook Medical Center, fees are charged per couple and registration is through our Parent Education Department. Programs are listed in the week of pregnancy we recommend for moms to participate. For specific dates, see our monthly calendars >
Prepared Childbirth: Instruction for Labor and Birth ($150 weekdays; $200 weekends; $250 one-day class)
Topics include the birth process, such as signs and symptoms of labor, stages of labor, when to go to the hospital and what to bring with you; pain management strategies, such as breathing and relaxation techniques, comfort measures, massage, positioning, hydrotherapy, medication options and epidural anesthesia; hospital procedures; cesarean section; and physical and emotional recovery after birth. A tour of our maternity center and childbirth films are included.
Available in Spanish at Morristown Medical Center only.
Mindful Pregnancy and Birth ($150)
Topics include mindful meditation and breathing, stages of labor, comfort measures, positions for labor, medical interventions, choices in pain management and hands-on practice. This program combines most of the material covered in our Calm Birth and Prepared Childbirth classes, but does not include childbirth films.
Childbirth Mini Classes
Each mini-class meets for one two-and-a-half-hour session:
Great Expectations: Prepared Childbirth and Infant Care for Parents Expecting Twins, Triplets or More ($75)
Topics include how to care for more than one baby at a time, the last few days of pregnancy, signs and symptoms of pre-term labor, and vaginal and cesarean deliveries. A tour of our maternity center and practical advice from moms of the Twins n’ Triplets Mothers Club of Morris County is included.

ABCs of Going Home With Your Baby ($75)
Topics include basic infant care, diapering, dressing, bathing, swaddling, holding, soothing, bottle feeding, when to call the baby’s doctor and how to manage with pets at home. Safety issues will also be addressed, including sleeping, cribs, car seats, baby products and baby-proofing your home.
Breastfeeding Your Baby Part I – Getting Started ($35)
Topics include breast milk production, skin-to-skin care, positioning and latching, how long and often to feed, and how to tell if the baby is getting enough milk. Partners are welcome.
Breastfeeding Your Baby Part II – Beyond the First Weeks ($35)
This class is for parents who have completed our Breastfeeding Your Baby Part I class or who have recently breastfed a baby. Topics include pumping and storing breast milk, maintaining milk supply and returning to work while continuing to breastfeed. Partners are welcome.
Becoming a Grandparent ($35)
Topics include recent changes in baby care and safety, breast- and bottle-feeding, daily care and ways for grandparents to play a supportive role. A film on baby care, a question-and-answer session and a tour of our maternity center are included.
Especially for Siblings ($35 for first child; $5 for each additional child)
Topics include what babies can do and how to safely hold them, ways older siblings can help their parents and tips for adults on easing the transition period for the big brother or sister. A short video and a tour of the maternity center are included. This program is recommended for parents with children ages 3 to 7.
Calm Birth ($60 – fee includes “Calm Birth” CD)
Topics include meditation and breathing techniques and progressive relaxation to reduce stress. Please note that this is not a prepared childbirth class.
Epidural Online Training
View a web-based audio/video health education program from Emmi® regarding epidurals. Please contact Overlook Medical Center's Anesthesiology Department at 908-598-1500 for an access code to view this program. Once you obtain the code, click here and then click on “Watch an Emmi Program.”

Maternity Center Tour – Morristown Medical Center
Expecting mothers are welcome to take a tour of Morristown Medical Center's Maternity Center. Moms can bring one guest who is 18 years of age or older, in addition to any siblings of the baby. Registration is required for both moms and guests. There is a security check-in on the day of the tour, and a photo ID must be shown. Please note that our maternity center tours are included in some of our other parent education classes.
Tours are available on the second Wednesday of every month at 7:00pm, Fridays at 2:00pm and every other Saturday at 10:30am and 1:30pm. For more information and to register, click here or call 1-800-247-9580.

Topics include gentle movement exercises, water weights and open discussions about pregnancy, birth and parenting.
