Patient-Centered Care Team

Many people play important roles in the surgical experience at Newton Medical Center. Although our team is composed of many individuals, some of the key people include:

The surgeon is the skilled member who leads the operating room (OR) team. In some instances, due to developments during surgery or immediately after, he or she may request the services of physician consultants, such as a pulmonologist, hematologist, cardiologist or other medical specialist.

An anesthesiologist specializes in the administration of anesthesia (medications that artificially cause the loss of sensation and usually consciousness, without loss of vital functions). Prior to surgery, he or she will review the patient’s medical history and determine the most appropriate form of medication to use. Patients can meet with a member of our anesthesia team on the day of their surgery.

Registered Nurse
Nurses are involved in multiple areas of surgical care, including the pre-admission testing area, ambulatory surgery unit,  operating room (OR), post-anesthesia care unit (PACU or recovery room) and the patient care floor where postoperative treatment is provided.

Nursing Assistant
Nursing assistants carry out the directions of the surgeon and nurses. They complete any pre-operative preparations, if required, and help inpatients with daily living activities, including bathing, meals and getting around the hospital.

Case and Care Manager
The case or care manager is a registered nurse who helps provide patients, who require a hospital stay, and their families with a smooth and effective delivery of care throughout hospitalization.

Occupational, Respiratory and Physical Therapist
Specially trained therapists are available based on individual patient needs and medical conditions. They help provide optimum health and recovery while a patient is hospitalized, as well as identify continued needs when he or she returns home.

Ancillary Staff
These team members comprise admission specialists, schedulers, documentation staff, specimen-processing technicians and clerical staff who assist in easing the surgery experience.
