Your Role in Recovery

Although surgical recovery varies from patient to patient, our goal at Newton Medical Center is to keep you comfortable and speed your recuperation.

Pain Management

Pain can interfere with the recovery process. It’s important to notify your medical team as soon as any discomfort begins so they can manage it effectively. One of our nurses will ask you to rate your pain on a scale of 0 to 10, with 0 representing no pain and 10 the worst pain you have ever experienced. This will help us determine how much relief you have obtained from medication and other pain management techniques.

Nausea

Some patients may feel nauseous from certain medications used during surgery. This is common and can be controlled. Let your nurse know as soon as you feel even the slightest amount of nausea, and he or she will give you medication to ease your symptoms. Do not try to wait out the nausea because it will become more difficult to treat once it worsens.

Coughing and Deep Breathing

Coughing and deep breathing exercises help clear your lungs and can prevent pneumonia, which is a serious illness. You may be given an incentive spirometer – a breathing tool to assist you in taking deep breaths. When coughing, splint the surgical area with your pillow, if possible.

Turning and Exercising Your Legs

Turning and exercising your legs and arms, will aid in blood flow and bodily functions, such as movement and breathing. A member of our staff will instruct you on these simple exercises, when permitted by the surgeon.

Eating as Part of Your Recovery

A healthy diet helps your body heal, but your digestion may be slowed as a result of surgery. When your surgeon gives you permission to start eating, our staff will help ease you back into a normal diet.
