Anesthesia, which is administered by a trained professional, can help keep you comfortable during and after your procedure. The different types offered at Newton Medical Center include:
- General anesthesia – uses medications that will keep you asleep throughout the operation
- Regional anesthesia – numbs the area of your body undergoing surgery, such as your foot or arm; you may also be given a sedative to help you feel relaxed
- Monitored anesthesia care and moderate (conscious) sedation – uses medications that will give you temporary amnesia, keeping you relaxed without putting you completely asleep
- Spinal and epidural anesthesia – administered in the lower spine, which results in a loss of sensation and movement in the area being operated upon; you may also be given a sedative to help you feel relaxed
The type of anesthesia you will receive depends on many factors, including the surgery you are having and your medical history. If you have any questions, please contact Newton Medical Center's Pre-Admission Testing Department at 973-579-8449.
