Medical Humanities

In collaboration with Drew University, Overlook Medical Center offers its Family Medicine residents the opportunity to obtain a Certificate in Medical Humanities during the three years of residency training.

To obtain the certificate, residents attend sessions in behavioral science, medical ethics, palliative care, medical narrative and  other medical humanities programs offered each year at Overlook Medical Center and Morristown Medical Center. The medical narrative sessions are part of the core Family Medicine behavioral science curriculum, coordinated by the program's behavioral scientist. Additional sessions are available in the Internal Medicine program when our residents do their medicine rotations. Ethics sessions are available on a monthly basis, and include attending selected meetings of the Overlook Bioethics Committee.

Family Medicine residents pursuing a Certificate in Medical Humanities also visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City to discuss and review artwork with an arts educator and a Family Medicine attending with the goal of strengthening observational skills. In addition, special medical humanities programs are conducted quarterly, including an annual humanities conference for all Atlantic Health System residents and staff.
